Sometimes, perspective makes the Arctic feel even bigger than it already is. 🇬🇱

At the end of Ata Sund, this massive outlet of the Greenland Ice Sheet meets the sea in a calving front stretching more than 3 km across, with ice cliffs rising about 200 metres above the water in some places.

With the glacier filling the entire horizon and our kayaks reduced to tiny dots in front of it, the scale felt almost unreal. The compression of the telephoto lens brings the ice much closer than it actually was, about 2 km of water still separated us from the glacier front!

Can’t wait for another season filled with deep snow, cold fingers, frozen eyelashes, crazy weather forecasts, way too many layers, hot drinks in mountain cabins, and great people to share the trails with. And somehow, despite all of that, always wanting to stay outside just a little longer... Bring on the Arctic winter. 🏔️❄️

Every summer, they head north to breed across the Arctic tundra, nesting among rocks and in small crevices where they raise their chicks during the short polar summer.

Known as Rodebay during the colonial era, the village grew around a trading post established by Danish colonists in the 18th century. Long before that, Inuit families had already been living and hunting along these shores for centuries.

Today, colorful wooden houses overlook Disko Bay while sled dogs rest beside them, waiting for winter. Just offshore, giant icebergs drift silently, creating one of the most surreal landscapes I’ve ever experienced!

Greenlandic sled dogs from the village of Oqaatsut 🐾🇬🇱

More than just working dogs, Greenlandic sled dogs are an essential part of Arctic culture and life. Bred for endurance and resilience, they have been helping Inuit communities travel and hunt across sea ice for centuries. To preserve the breed’s genetic purity, Greenlandic sled dogs are only allowed north of the Arctic Circle in Greenland. Crossing that boundary with these dogs is prohibited, preventing interbreeding with other dog breeds.

Even today, in many northern communities, dog sleds remain an important means of transportation during winter.

During our sea kayak expedition through Disko Bay, humpback whales surfaced around our kayaks while bowhead whales, one of the longest-living mammals on Earth, crossed the fjords.

Somewhere beyond the horizon, Sermeq Kujalleq glacier is constantly pushing massive blocks of ice into the fjord, creating the endless stream of icebergs that slowly drift toward Disko Bay.

By the end of the day, we’d find a place to camp, cook dinner with a ridiculous view, listen to whales surfacing somewhere out in the fjord… and then spend the next hour losing the battle against the mosquitoes.

Every summer, these giants return to the waters of Greenland, drawn by the abundance of food found in Disko Bay. After spending the winter in warmer breeding grounds, they travel thousands of kilometres to feed in the rich Arctic waters before beginning their long journey south once again.

Just completed the Sea Kayak Expedition Leader training program with @polarctika in West Greenland.

Over the course of two weeks, I had the opportunity to journey from Ilulissat to the Eqi Glacier, assisting with navigation, group leadership, risk management, and camp logistics for a team of 7 participants.

Paddling among icebergs, setting up camp on remote Arctic shores, and adapting to the ever-changing conditions of Disko Bay provided invaluable hands-on experience in expedition kayaking. The training also reinforced key skills in route planning, decision-making, wilderness living, and group safety in a remote polar environment.

An unforgettable experience in one of the most spectacular paddling destinations on Earth.
